Louis Mulcahy Pottery Workshop Tours

Details

During the tour, the visitor will be taken through the full process of how a pot is created, dried, decorated and fired in our kilns. The tour begins in the “throwing room” where the visitor can see pots being made on the wheel. The guide will tell the story of how the Pottery started, what inspired Louis to set up his workshop on Europe’s most westerly tip in 1975 and how he learned the craft.

The clay preparation and drying process will be explained as the visitor is brought through the workshop, where the clay is sourced and how it is made up to Louis’ specifications.

The visitor is then brought through to the Casting and Jigger Jolly areas, where David and Marie explain how each piece is created by pouring or pressing clay into the moulds, how it is removed and fettled before going through the bisque firing.

All of the pottery’s glazes have been devised by Louis to his own specific recipes over the last forty years. Mary, our decorator, will explain the glazing, decorating and firing process in the Kiln area. She can also be seen applying her free hand brush work to each pot.

The tour finishes in the shop/showroom where the visitor can see the full range at it’s best.
