Volvo D2D Race builds closer relationship with Dingle Town Community and Businesses
The Volvo Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Yacht Race starts from Dun Laoghaire on June 12th and is scheduled to arrive into Dingle Harbour over the weekend of June 15th and 16th. Volvo Car Ireland are the title sponsors of this wonderful offshore race that takes place every 2 years. They are supported by the Tralee based dealer Billy Naughton Motors who represents Volvo Cars in the region.
The race has also had a long association with the Dingle Skellig Hotel where the gala prizegiving will take place on the evening of Saturday June 15th. The Dingle Skellig Hotel have in fact been the long term supporter of the event since it was started in 1993, and have been the main link between the town of Dingle and the National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire.
Race organisers have worked hard over the years to build connections with Dingle Town Community and Business. In 2019 this has progressed to a new level by working closely with local bodies and local businesses in Dingle.
Firstly, the race organisers have run a selection process with Dingle Sailing Club to select young sailors from the area to crew on yachts racing in the event. This will include a top spot for a young sailor to join the Windfall Team on the 94 foot super yacht for the race. Windfall will be chasing the course record for the race, already held by Michael Cotter and his team. The intention is to get some reports from the chosen Dingle sailor of his / her experience on the boat via media channels. Several other sailors will be found crewing positions on other participating boats. Regular updates will be sent via Afloat and to local Kerry media to provide race coverage.
Dingle Harbour and Marina personnel have long provided support for the event and will continue to do so with some reduced rates for visiting boats, as well as assisting with the race finish logistics.
The prizes for the race come from Dingle Crystal and a special Volvo Perpetual Trophy has been commissioned for the race again in 2019.
Dick Mac’s Brewery have stepped up to the mark with their latest home grown beers which will undoubtedly be consumed with vigour by finishing crews. Part of the burden on race management planning the event in Dingle recently was to be the official tasters of the Dick Mack’s brews!!
There is of course always Murphy’s Ice Cream for those with a sweeter tooth.
Though there has been a drive to establish links with community and business in Dingle there are other sponsors relationships for 2019. Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin bring a County Roscommon flavour (sorry for the pun) by sponsoring some liquid race prizes and The Bretzel Bakery are putting up some baked produce at the race start and finish.

The race will have approximately 40 boats racing varying in size between 30 and 100 feet long with crews of between 2 and 20 sailors on board. The first D2D race took place in 1993 and the race has grown to become one of the great mini offshore sailing challenges in the UK and Irish waters. Underlining this growth in status is the fact that the D2D race now forms part of both the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Irish Sea Offshore Racing Associations 2019 series. Dublin Bay Sailing Club also support the event by providing race equipment and personnel.
The race will test crews’ skills in terms of fast sailing, accurate navigation and tactics and great teamwork. Crews include both male and female top sailors and there is a separate prize to encourage this growth of women in the race which mirrors the Volvo Ocean Race ethos. In addition a number of mini 6.50 yachts will race in a separate division for a one design prize for the class. Of the 15 finishers from 43 starters in 2017, 3 of them were mini 6.50 yachts underlining their ability as sailors and the pedigree of the boats to handle all kinds of conditions despite their size.
The National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire are the race organisers and provide the world class starting and finishing teams for the race management. The yachts can be tracked live online using the YB Live Tracking system (Yellow Brick) which can be found both through the www.d2drace.ie or through www.afloat.ie from the start on Wednesday June 12th.
