Windsurfing on the Dingle Peninsula

Voted Number 1 Windsurfing destination in the World - "Sunday Times"

Windsurfing is a versatile watersport as it can be done either in waves or on flat water. It is a surface water sport that combines the exciting elements of both surfing and sailing. Although it might be considered a minimalistic version of a sailboat, a windsurfer offers experiences that are outside the scope of any other sailing craft design. Windsurfers can perform jumps, inverted loops, spinning maneuvers, and other “freestyle” moves that cannot be matched by any sailboat.

The Dingle Peninsula is an ideal country for windsurfing as it has plenty of lakes, inlets, salt marshes and safe harbours in which to practice. Ireland's climate is also complimentary to windsurfing as it is influenced by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream and is in the path of the prevailing southwesterly winds from the Atlantic Ocean. The combination of these conditions serves to make Ireland the perfect location for windsurfing.

Open Farms on the Dingle Peninsula

ainmhí feirme - farm animal

As you travel around the Dingle Peninsula the patchwork green fields divided with hand built dry stone walls and ancient ditches stand testament to generations of hard-working West Kerry farmers. For many centuries they have carefully tended this land, growing crops on steep mountain slopes and raising animals on sheer rocky sea cliffs. Farming has been and remains an important way of life for many on the Dingle Peninsula.

Experience this way of life for yourself and learn about traditional farming on the Dingle Peninsula by visiting a Pet farm or Animal farm. These real working farms are educational and fun for both adults and children. Feed and pet a donkey, hold a baby lamb, watch sheepdogs at work or enjoy a real West Kerry farmhouse welcome with steaming hot tea and home baked scones. If you want to get the maximum farm experience while you are here you can even stay in farmhouse accommodation.

Photography on the Dingle Peninsula

Many people come to the Dingle Peninsula to try and capture the magic and spectacular scenery of this most westerly point in Europe. Whether you are a professional photographer, or a keen amateur you will find amazing vistas and unique natural surroundings guaranteed to inspire and delight. Ancient landscapes of dry-stone walls, majestic mountain peaks and sheer sea cliffs compete with the raw forceful energy of the ocean. North Atlantic Ocean weather fronts bring a special quality of light, creating atmospheric mists and bewitching sunsets.

Stormy beaches, abandoned villages, and a rich cultural life will beguile and tease the photographer’s eye. Long summer nights of lingering twilight and dramatic winter sunrises become extra special when experienced on a long narrow mountainous peninsula jutting out into the ocean.
